Mock up completed

To pre-empt any potential problems with the model build, I have opted to make a mock up of two floors. This will highlight anything I need to be aware of before I begin to build the final model.

Issues that I have found I need to be aware of are as follows:

The paint rubbing off where I apply the glue to stick the vertical columns to the floor slabs.

There is also an issue with the glazing where it meets at the corner of the building. I need to make sure that I achieve a neat corner avoiding the gap as seen below.

The vertical columns were cut to an angle of 35.5° using the circular saw and angling the blade. Originally I used the indicator on the saw to set the correct angle. However this method wasn't accurate enough as can be seen below, so I decided to use an inclinometer to measure the angle of the blade.

I also had issues with the material thickness for the columns, it was supposed to be 5mm thick however this can be thicker or thinner by a few tenths of a mm. The laser cutting drawing was set to allow 5mm however the columns wouldn't fit so I had to file down the material using a needle file. To avoid this pitfall for the actual model I intend to cut the columns first and measure the thickness before I cut the floor plates.

Priming windows!

I chose to spray the windows onto the 2mm acrylic. Without thinking I primed the windows first with a grey primer and then sprayed them black. This meant that the internal finish to the windows was grey and the external finish black. After looking at the images of the interior design I realised that the internal finish also needs to be black.

Visit to RHS+P and Millennium Models

Today I visited RHS+P to see Mike Fairbrass to discuss my approach to making the 1:200 model. It was also a worthwhile visit to see their offices.

Whilst in London I also visited Simon Hamnell at Millennium Models to seek his advice and input on how to approach the making of the model.

My Jewel Model

I have made this 'Jewel Model' in the style of those made by RHS+P as an exploration of the information they have provided and to understand the project better. I am visiting their offices tomorrow so I intend to take this model along with me for their feedback.

Jewel Model

As the building was designed by RHS+P I was told by my tutor about an in house model style which they use. The models are called 'Jewel Models' and are very quick laser cut block models built up in layers of clear and live edge acrylic. The detail is very simple and more about a representation of the overall form very simplistically.

One Hyde Park

For my final major project I have opted to make a model of 'One Hyde Park' designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners. I aim to make a model at a scale of 1:200. Due to the nature of the project and after speaking to Mike Fairbrass the Modelshop manager I have opted to make a model of all four buildings at this scale.
